| Aran
Welsh Cobs near Abergavenny was founded in 1967, with the
initial breeding of Welsh Mountain ponies.
The foundation cob mare,
Cathedine Victory Maid, was purchased in 1972 in foal to
the famous stallion, Hendy Brenin. The subsequent foal was
a colt, Aran Idris, affectionately known as "Carrots"
due to his spectacular colouring. He became the stud stallion
until his untimely death in 1992. His progeny have excelled
in the performance field, especially in show jumping.
At present, the broodmares
are all descendants of Hendy Brenin and have inherited his
wonderful temperament and quality of bone. Aran Bronwyn
is the granddam of the stud, being the last daughter of
Hendy Brenin and Victory Maid. Her daughters, grand-daughters
and great grand-daughters make up the breeding stock of
the present stud.
Brenhindy Taran-y-Storm
is the present stud stallion continuing the Hendy Brenin
blood line.
The Aran stud is situated
in the Brecon Beacons National Park, an area of outstanding
natural beauty. The land rises steeply to 1000 feet, and
the cobs are kept outside all the year round. The exception
being the foals, which during their first winter are housed
at night and are out during the day. Welsh cobs are a hardy
breed and can cope with bad weather, being well protected
by their thick coats and long manes and tails.
After waiting all last summer for Cheyenne to foal, who looked like a football on pins, she produced a filly Aran Annabel in October, not exactly the best time for a foal, but with careful feeding through the winter, she has grown into a nice animal.
This spring, Glanvyrnwy Secret Lady has had a lovely colt foal by Brenhindy Taran y Storm, he was born on Feb 16th, and wore a little foal rug when out in the snow. Aran Georgina has had another stunning foal, a colt by Newydd Lloyd, very much the stamp of last year's lovely filly, so she has returned to Lloyd as the two of them obviously suit each other down to the ground.
